Bhutan being the mountainous country entering into Bhutan is either by flight or by land. The roads are well connected and country is bordered with INDIA in the south and Tibet and China in the North. Though China is our next neighbor in the north but we do not have any diplomatic relation with them and therefore no road or Flights operates from Bhutan to China. If travelling to China from Bhutan you have to fly to Kathmandu Nepal or Bangkok Thailand.
There are three entry points from India to Bhutan and if you are planning to drive overland to Bhutan you have to come via INDIA. The first entry point is from Phuntsholing bordered with west Bengal. If you are planning tour in North east INDIA (Sikkim, Darjeeling and Kalimpong) the best route to enter Bhutan is via Phuntsholing and this is the main route used by most of the tourist. The journey time from each of this place to 4 to 5 years depending upon the traffic.
Second Entry point is from Samdrupjongkhar near Guwahati. This is quite far from main touristic center but if you plan to explore East West Bhutan Travel you can enter from Samdrupjongkhar and our guide shall assist you with all formalities.
Third entry is from Gaylegphu the southern District but this entry point is hardly used by the tourist.
All Indian can travel Bhutan without Visa but it is mandatory to have vote card for immigration purpose. Only two travel documents is valid for Indian travelling to Bhutan and that is valid passport or Vote card for adult and original Birth Certificate for child who doesnot have vote card or passport. Passport validity should be more than six months. If you are booking a tour with tour operator than you need to send you color passport scan copy for advance Bhutan permit. This advance permit will save lots of time at the border. If your travel date falls on weekends or on government holidays than you cant process your permit.
No other documents like Adhar card, driving license or student card is valid for entry into Bhutan. As for child without passport and below 18 years of age should have birth certificate accompanied by parents during Bhutan entry. This is also to inform our valued Indian traveller that if you have Punakha and onward destination in your tour program than you must plan ahead because Punakha also needs special permit which can be applied in Thimphu.
The best and easy way for Indian tourist to get into Bhutan is by flight. Flight operates from Delhi, Kolkatta, Guwahati and Bagdugra and your travel permit is given upon arrival at paro international airport. Please note that permit issued at Airport is valid only in Thimphu and Paro. This will depend upon individual company. Some company will ask for 100 percent advance payment and some 50% and rest upon arrival. You can make the deal with the operator regarding the Tour payment.
Yes you can use in some hotels and handicraft shop but not in other places. You better carry cash. You can always withdraw money from the ATM machine which accepts international debit and Master card.
